As week 12 wraps up here in Banff the SnowSkool group are preparing themselves for one last week of shredding and partying.
Since the level 2 exams finished up last week with such a success, riding and partying have defiantly been the theme.
On top of the all this fun a handful of the group have been sitting extra curricula exams. Tom Howse and Oli Williams held it down for the skiers and sat, and passed, their level one Park Skiing Qualification. The 4-day course commenced on Monday morning and the guys, as well as a few other participants, were lead through the terrain parks at Sunshine Village by a highly qualified instructor.
On Tuesday the guys worked on their rail game by slowly walking onto a rail and balancing while not moving and learning how to slide on their unnatural side. The weather on Tuesday was sublime, another classic spring day with a blue bird sky and not a breath of wind. The rest of the SnowSkool group got amongst the great conditions also. Logan swapped his snowboard for a set of skis for the first time, as did Nico Duvivier, to varying success.
On Wednesday Lana Culley, Hugh Mason, Ben Willemson and Mason Schlosser began day one of a two-day Snowboard Park Level One Qualification course. Similar to the skiers, the worked on riding techniques of some more simple park tricks and rails. These courses introduce and develop a wide range of skills and techniques and focus on the ability of these students to then teach the skills themselves to other skiers and snowboarders.
On Wednesday night a large squad of the SnowSkool group boarded a bus to Calgary to watch the Calgary flames take on the LA King in the ice hockey stadium, The Saddledome. Helen, Hayley, AJ, Gavin, Emily, Fraser and Rachel, lead by reps Adam and Josh, were amongst the 25 strong group that descended on the City to watch the Flames get beaten in a great NHL game. Lots of beer, nachos, hot dogs and merchandise jerseys were purchased and the group enjoyed an electric atmosphere in ‘The Dome’.
Thursday was another powder day at Sunshine Village! With over 30cm of new snow this week its proved to be the season that keeps on giving! Unfortunately, the extra snow made for a challenging last day for the guys and girls sitting their park courses. Despite this the group all passed their course and gained an extra qualification for their time here. Keir Coupland, James Keeble and Gavin Marpole were amongst the group enjoying the fresh snow, hitting big cliffs off The Goats Eye Mountain. Helen, AJ and Holly Holmes skied some crazy terrain on Thursday, hitting an area known at The Canyons to get some fresh tracks.
Friday was another exceptional spring day. 5cm of fresh snow dusted the already unbelievable base at Sunshine Village and the SnowSkool gang awoke to a warm and windless blue bird day! The majority of the group up there spent much of the day splitting their time between the Angel chairlift, the Terrain Park and Trappers (the on-hill bar).
On Saturday night the 60 strong group enjoyed a huge group dinner downtown. Joined by most of their instructors the guys and girls had a special night of drinks and great food at ‘The Elk and Oarsmen’, a restaurant and bar in downtown Banff.
One week in this amazing place left!
