The second week of the Banff course kicked off with some hangovers endured after Sunday fun-day in town, but everyone knows the best way to get over them is a few runs on snow and the fresh mountain air. Fortunately, this is plentiful in Banff!! The group relaxed Monday evening by having their own mini cinema screening of Men in Black in the lobby before heading to bed to rest up for the rest of the weeks lessons on the snow.
Jesse, a dual qualified Sunshine instructor working with SnowSkool, spent Tuesday challenging his snowboard group down South side chutes, a difficult double black diamond run. The group were focusing on turning with their lower body to complete turn on more difficult terrain. Jesse said he was impressed with his group how everyone completed it with ease.
Another SnowSkool instructor, Sophie, spent the day with her group dodging in and around trees and challenging her group with a difficult set of moguls, very happy with everyone’s progression already.
Tuesday evening was spent with a big group of the SnowSkoolers heading down the road from the hostel to the water slides and hot pools. The perfect way to relax those muscles is a soak under the stars!
The snow dumped hard on Wednesday night and Thursday morning was spent ripping some untouched powder lines and tree runs. The SnowSkool reps joined a group before lessons, lapping the Standish lift where there was plenty of fresh snow and cliff drops to enjoy.
Thursday evening was followed with the group joining together in the Storm Cellar for Trivia. The theme was Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll! It seemed SnowSkool were the smartest ones in the bar as Nicole, Will and Hugh’s team took the win.
Friday was Australia Day!! This lead to the time tradition in Banff for all the Australians to ski and snowboard in their boardshorts and bikinis, apparently ‘it wasn't even that cold’! After a full day on the slopes it was time to celebrate Oscar Mentink’s birthday and continue the Aussie day celebrations. A bar crawl had been organized around town, were our big SnowSkool group went from The Gap, Wild Bills and then finishing the night on the dance floor at the Dancing Sasquatch.
Over the weekend many of the SnowSkoolers went for a freeride up at Sunshine. Will and Hugh headed for some park laps whilst the reps showed a group the side country of the slopes, to an area known as ‘Backdoor’. This consisted of a hike through the snow to a fresh powder run that leads to a small valley full of tricky natural obstacles to dodge. The weekend was finished with Oscar Harte’s Birthday for which a Sunday Funday pub crawl through the town was organized! Hopefully the group can brave their hangovers for the Monday afternoon lesson on the slopes.
See you next week!
