So week 8 has finished and what a week it has been.
This has been the last full week of training for the skiers before their exam starting next week on Thursday. The snowboarders are a bit more fortunate, as their exam starts a little later so they have more time with their instructors next week.
This week has been about fine tuning and getting mileage on the skis and boards. The trainers have done an amazing job transforming the SnowSkoolers from normal day to day skiers and boarders to well-trained Level 2-ready experts!
Tuesday was the famous dress up day for the training centre at Cardrona, so everyone got creative with the outfits and turned up for training. We had Top Gun fighter pilots, Power Rangers, 1980s ski instructors, Hawaiian shirts and even Suits. You name it we had it - great turn out this year guys and a fantastic effort on the dressing up!
The skiers got to step it up even further on Tuesday morning as they joined the level 3 programme for a morning. During the L3 sessions the skiers were tasked to ski a set brush corridor course over in Captains. With some great conditions on Tuesday they all gave it a good go!
Tuesday night we went to eat over in the spice room for another sensational curry which went down a treat after a testing day on the hill.
Marvin was back to running a freestyle session for the snowboarders on Wednesday, which was greatly appreciated yet again. Joosje took a chance to teach this week as well - and helped someone learn switch snowboarding.
Another birthday this week in the SnowSkool crew, Happy Birthday to Michal for Monday. Marta treated Michal to the present of a lifetime as she took him for a skydive on Saturday. There must have been a few idea seeds sown throughout the course from Antonio and Pedro who are our resident skydiving instructors. Michal, Matty Lucas and Rodrigo all took the leap and got the best view of Wanaka, from 13,000ft!
Thursday was a slightly different day for everyone as the instructors took the students for a day in town focusing on teaching and getting the technical knowledge dialled in. Everyone was keen to get back on snow come Friday - and they all put their new teaching skills to the test.
On Friday night the Wells brothers, local ski legends, were hosting a gig in the Waterbar so after a big week on the hill it was only appropriate that the team went out to let their hair down. Not everyone has a restful weekend though: Jadyn, Emma, Jess and Andrew were all up the hill on Saturday morning getting in as much extra practice as they could. Lucky them too, the views on Saturday were incredible.
I think its been fair to say this week has been a mixed bag of weather and conditions up the hill. We have been blessed with quite a few warm blue bird days but this has made the snow a bit more questionable in the morning. Luckily this weekend the temperature dropped and we had a nice sprinkling of snow on Saturday night. This Saturday-sprinkling made for simply a wonderful day on Sunday, which Emma made the most of with some extra training time.
While Matty, Jaydn, Josh and a few others went on an adventure Sunday afternoon. Marvin, Ben and Joosje made the most of some quiet time to relax, tune some of their equipment before exams come around, and soak up the spring sun in Wanaka.
Shout out to Jess this week for getting her kids' certification Level 1 down, maybe a few other will do this at the end of the season. Good luck to Charlie this week as his exam starts on Monday morning, best of luck buddy!
That’s all from this week over in Wanaka, check in next week and catch up with what’s going on in spring in Wanaka!
