This week started off with an awesome bluebird weather day on Monday but unfortunately we couldn’t say the same for Tuesday. However, spirits were high as it was time for the annual ITC (Instructor Training Centre) dress-up day! This is an ITC tradition and the students had been planning their costumes for a while and even the trainers got involved! The costumes ranged from a clown, a lovely pink leopard print onesie modelled by Jack, a variety of retro costumes and of course not forgetting Colin…in a dress. Needless to say there was a lot of hilarity throughout the day.
It really was awesome to see the students out on the slopes rocking their costumes, feeling relaxed and getting fully involved in this ITC tradition. Although in hindsight I am sure that a few people could have done with some extra base layers (not Colin though, he saved himself a very cold up draught by wearing ski pants under his dress, a far better option than just traditional pants on this occasion).
This week it was time for another celebration, Fergus’s 18th birthday, a big one! So on Thursday we all went to ‘Cow’ for a delicious Italian dinner to start the evening off in style, followed by a few celebratory drinks at the Water Bar to end the night.
This week on snow, it was back to more refining of the essential movements of the SBINZ/NZSIA. By this point, the students have learned all that they can from the trainers, so now it is down to each student to put what they have been taught, practise-practise-practise, and ensure they are ready for Level 2, which kicks off next week!
A few people have been having major break-throughs this week, finally correcting and vastly improving areas they had been struggling in for a while, which shows real determination and spirit! The pleasure it brings us to hear everyone so positive and upbeat when reflecting on how far they have come. Sometimes it’s not all about just passing the exam at the end of the 11 weeks, the end goal, but the progress and the journey that you take throughout. Improving your skills, becoming more confident and being happy with what you have already achieved, those are major accomplishments that everyone should be proud of. Awesome work everyone!
A MASSIVE congratulations to Kat and Joe for achieving their Level 1 this week. This goes to show that hard work and determination does pay off! Well done!
At the weekend it was the final day of the snowboarders' kid’s certification exam. Nat, Alex, Fergus, Seb, and Cara all had a great experience completing this relaxed 3-day course and came out with big smiles, great memories and tones of fun drills, tips and tricks to add to their instructor portfolio for the future. A few students managed a short adventure of their own over the weekend, renting a car and road tripping out of Wanaka/Cardrona. They all went for a ski and snowboard at Treble Cone and Ohau ski fields, both amazing resorts. Getting to explore the south island and more of New Zealand is one of the biggest opportunities you have out here, it’s such a beautiful country! Being a Kiwi I am biased I know but exploring more of the south island was definitely a course highlight for them.
All in all, this was a pretty full-on and fun-packed week, with an even more exciting week to come. The skiers are starting their Level 2 exam on the 7th September, and the snowboarders on 9th September. Level 2 is finally here, and we have every bit of faith in every single student heading into it.
Good luck to everyone, make the most of your last days of training, smash the exam out of the ballpark, and most of all enjoy it!
