If you’re thinking about becoming a ski instructor and want a qualification that’s modern, flexible, and internationally recognised, the PSIE might be just what you’re looking for.

The Professional Ski Instructors of Europe (PSIE) launched in 2024, founded by Jamie Kagan and Derek Tate. It was created as a European counterpart to the Professional Ski Instructors of Canada (PSIC), which was founded in 2023.

Why Was PSIE Created?

Jamie has worked in the ski industry for over two decades, with experience in resorts like Banff and SilverStar. He holds qualifications from BASI, IASI, Euro Ski Pro and the Swiss Brevet Federal.

Over the years, Jamie and Derek saw a need for a new kind of instructor qualification - one that would be adaptable and better connected internationally. After seeing how well the PSIC model worked, the idea of a qualification that could cross borders was born.

What Makes PSIE Different?

Unlike many traditional systems, PSIE is built for flexibility. “It’s what we’re calling borderless certification,” says Jamie.

“When you join PSIE or PSIC, you’re a member of both. You could train in Canada one season, then continue to Japan or New Zealand the next - all within the same organisation.”

PSIE also takes a different approach to exams. Instead of separating assessments from training, it offers continuous evaluation. You’re assessed as you go, which helps reduce pressure and creates a more realistic learning environment.

How Does the Qualification Work?

PSIE has four levels, from Level 1, designed for beginners, through to Level 4, aimed at professionals reaching the highest teaching standard. Each level focuses on real teaching, not just technical ability. That makes the training feel more relevant and easier to apply on the mountain.

How Is PSIE Linked to PSIC?

PSIE and PSIC share the same leadership and work closely to create a consistent experience, no matter where instructors are based. PSIE licences PSIC’s educational stack, and both teams work together to refine course materials.

You can begin your training in Canada, and continue it in Europe, or vice versa, without having to switch systems. Jamie says: “It's one of the few qualifications that supports that kind of international development.

“You also become part of a bigger community of instructors around the world. We’re here to support instructors as they travel and work across the globe.”

Where Can You Work With a PSIE Qualification?

PSIE instructors are already working in a wide range of countries. Although ski instructor hiring is decided by individual ski schools, PSIE qualifications have opened doors in Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and China.

Is PSIE Right for You?

If you’re looking for a qualification that supports your career across countries and prioritises hands-on teaching, PSIE is worth considering. It gives you the chance to grow at your own pace, train in different countries, and join a global network of instructors.
